TIP OF THE MONTH

DIAGONAL RUN GAINING SUBSTANTIAL GROUND
This is the beginning of one of Colette Thomson's excellent progressive routines

Stage 1
• Player A passes across to B and then runs a sharp diagonal to receive the ball from B
V then moves to receive an easy pass from A
V then repeats the drill in the opposite direction
A runs to the back of the other line

Coaching Points
• Because A is moving across to her left to receive the ball, and by V moving to her right, it makes A's pass an "easy" pass
A doesn't have to change her body shape to make the pass to V

Stage 1

Stage 2

Stage 2
• Player A passes across to B and then runs a sharp diagonal to her left
• Before receiving the ball from B, A cuts back to her right
V then moves to her left to receive an "easy" pass from A
V then repeats the drill in the opposite direction
• As before A runs to the back of the other line

Coaching Points
• Which foot should A use to change direction? The outside left one or the inside right one. Explore
• By V moving to her left, it makes A's pass an "easy" pass

Repeat the drill, but with A starting on the other side.
